Rainy Days, Rainy Nights Effects the FISHING

Spring Fishing Is Upon Us 

 "SPRING FISHING IS ALMOST HERE"

 

The Ice Road to Madeline Island will probably not open this year.  Well it’s mid February up here in the North Country and fish are starting to get into their mid winter pattern’s. The bay itself has a good ice cover from the head of the bay north to long island. North of Long Island and the south channel up to Vantassells’ and Bayfield area the ice sheet is 6 to 9 inches but check as you go;… the south channel area can change ice conditions FAST. The ice is 5 to 7 inches from Bayfield north up to the north end of Basswood from Basswood to Hermit/ Wilson. From Hermit/ Wilson north towards Stockton there is a lot of pack ice and the ice is thinner and should be checked if going out on it most should not even go out into this area right now. People are catching fish in the area of Basswood and even off of the Ice Road going to Madeline Island. Guy’s have been catching some browns and splake around the shallow water along the islands. Lake Trout fishing is just getting underway but we lost a bunch of ice this week with the big blow around Stockton and north of Stockton. The bite has been a little hit and miss; depending on the day and the area best depths have been 160 to 180 feet some guys are working baits slow other’s with more action it just depends on the day.  White Fish are hitting most days in the deeper water of the bay to the South Channel also around Red Cliff area over to Basswood 60 to 100 ft has been the best depth.

The lighthouse area in the bay has been putting out a mixed bag of smelt and perch have been the most consistent with a few Browns and Pike being caught, with a few Splake and Walleye mixed in too. At 1^st & 2nd Landing we are seeing some Perch action but it is hit and miss for taking a meal home. The Trout and Salmon bite has been a hit and miss depending on where people are landing on active fish.

Inland fishing has been good depending on the day, some nice catches of Crappies has been reported from a lake south of Drummond. The guy’s in Iron River have been getting a few Walleye and lots of Bluegills’.

Sorry for the delay in our reports,

Well summer has finally arrived here on the bay and the fishing hasn't been that bad,fisherman have been having better success on the smallies out here,using live bait,spinnerbaits and still using plastics,the fish are in their normal summer spots now,work the breakwall,theweed flats east of the wall and out on the rockpile ,watch out by the end of long island as there are some commercial nets out there until aug 15th.

walleyes are still being caught in the hot pond area using leeches and crawlers and also around the breakwall and adjacent channel edgestrolling stickbaits at dawn and dusk.

The trollers have been doing very well out on the flats and out by outer and stockton islands for lake trout with some bonus browns and salmon still hitting also,flasher/fly combos and magnum spoons are the trick with 90ft about the minimum depth you want to be in right now.

Our mayfly hatch has peaked this past week and is winding down now,so get ready as the fishing should start to pick up steadily now for all species.

Don't forget to stop at RIVERROCK INN&BAIT for the best live bait in the area and a great selection of tackle also.
