Tomorrow, saturday march 29th, marks the opening of our steelhead season in the rivers. Conditions on the brule should be excellent this year with many holdover fish from the fall run, and probably a few fresh run fish in allready. There's also usually a few big lake-run browns that overwintered in the river still hanging around to. Spawn fished through the deeper holding pools, or yarn fished in the faster water should produce fish. For the flyfishermen, large black stoneflies, eggsucking leeches, and various egg paterns should also produce fish. Our rivers in the ashland/washburn region will most likely be slow until we get a major meltdown or some rain to bring up some fish.
Ice action at the rivermouths has been producing some nice steelhead along with a few coho, splake, or browns. Spawn or lake shiners fished early and late in the day should produce fish. Up in the bay fishing conditions remain unchanged from the last week. A few walleye, bass, coho, browns, perch and smelt are being caught off ashland in the channels and out towards the lighthouse. A recent trip towards the lighthouse bagged us whitefish, several small perch, coho, and a few large bass up to 21".
A few guys are still going bobbing, but with the deteriorating ice conditions this is becoming very dangerous and is not recommended. In the bay itself there is still plenty of ice for machine or walk on fishing. The landing access areas are starting to get a little shaky. NO vehicle traffic is safe at this point!!
