The spring bite is picking up on the bay and on the out lying waters. The walleye bite is starting to hit the crawler's on Lindy rigs and harness's in 4 to 10ft of water. Leech's are also putting up fish. The same for stick baits. Some fish are being found a little deeper but water temps are holding a good number of fish in shallow water for the time being. Some bigger walleye's have been boated; with male’s making up the bulk of the catch right now. The big females will start feeding in the next week or two. The pike bite is also in full swing, folks fishing from shore are staying on a good bite with smelt, casting spoons, and stick bait's (some 20 plus lb fish being reported.) Others are trolling or casting new upcoming weeds with spoons and stick baits. I and my clients have landed 70 some pike in the last few weeks’ trolling and soaking smelt on the bottom, so the pike bite has been pretty good this spring. Please remember these old pike take a long time to get to this point; releasing these old pike will only help in years to come. The small mouth bite is starting to pick up with both pre spawn and post spawn fish being caught. On the right day Senko's and Swim jigs are working well, twitch baits and spinner baits. Also live bait is picking a few fish. Live bait is also a great go to on day's when the weather fronts have the bass in a funk. SMALLIE ANGLERS please make a note: The use of barbed hooks and live bait are NO LONGER RESTRICTED in the northern bass zone but all fish must be released until June 20th. The trout & salmon bite has been holding its own. Some guy's are doing well around Long Island on the right days trolling planner board's with stick baits and spoons. Others are working deeper water with down riggers and dipsy divers with flashers and spoon's and fly's and boating some real good catches. Finally, stop in at River Rock Inn & Bait Shop and check out this season’s new baits and tackle, rod's and reels, trolling gear, stick baits and smallie gear.
