Fishing has been on and off. The weather has been very different this summer with very cool nights and no shortage of wind.
I have been trolling a fair bit with lots of success out by “old buoy 14” in the south channel. In the last week all the fish have been Lake Trout in the 23”-24” range with a few in the 28” range. Most all of the bite has been on the bottom with spoons “dark colors” or dodger with horse fly’s. LOTS OF ACTION!!! Can’t wait for fall fishing and the salmon.
The Smallies on the bay has been average with lots of 18” / 19” being caught. Most of the catches are in the deeper water of 12-15 foot plus; off the lighthouse break wall using walleye suckers. But on the nice days the fish are still up in shallow sunning themselves.
The walleye’s on the bay are tough, lots of bait to compete with, the mayfly hatch have been on and off all summer so the bite has been slow, but still some decent catches with a little work.
I have been on the river inland last week and had a great day catching some nice Browns; it has been years since I fished a river in midsummer, all I can say is WOW. Lots of fun and no bugs, probably because of the cool nights and lots of fish and tons of wildlife.... the canoe trip was a nice break.
The reports from inland have been good with some nice catches of pan fish and crappies. We have been moving lots of live bait with people using crawlers, leeches, and minnows. The walleyes’ are being a little more allusive with most fishermen reporting a hard day’s work for a good catch.
