October 7th, 2009 Fall fishing and hunting report
Fall has arrived the bite has been picking up steady. And will continue until freeze up. Trout & salmon have been picking up. Trollers are reporting better catches daily, some days better than others but for the most part fall areas have been producing well in the shallow waters but we are still out deep seeing action. Lake trout season will be closing at the end of the month and will reopen Dec 1st. Coho’s and Browns have been making up the bulk of the catch as of right now with a few Kings mixed in too. Trolling from Houghton point up to Pikes Bay has been putting up the most action for trollers. Trolling around the Islands will be picking up as well for Browns and Splake. Most fish are being picked up on dipse’s and boards with small flashers and spoons for the coho’s with some browns are being picked up on stick baits hot colors and natural colors are both producing well when the browns can be found. The bay its self has been picking up also; the Smallie bite has been very strong the last week or so; with a daily average of 30 to 40 fish for my boat. Most fish are starting to get ready for the fall move to wintering areas. Deep running crank baits and lipless baits are working well, but sucker minnows have been best for big numbers of bass. Walleye for the most part are hitting “when located” some of the biggest eye’s of the year can be caught during the mid to late fall months. Trolling is best but can be tough due to the amount of broken weeds on the surface. Northern Pike have also been feeding better in the last few weeks with live bait and spoons, but some of the best catches have been on stick baits. Some big pike have been reported by a client of mine; landed a dandy last week at 44inchs and 4 more from the upper 20’s to mid 30’s; “all and all the fishing has been good and will be great over the next month.” Perch have been hitting good too! With some nice 12 plus inchers, live bait has been the key for these big yellow bellies.
Stream fishing is off to a bit of a slow start but some fish are being caught. The Fish creek is seeing a few Lake Run fish but more rain is needed to get the run on its way. The Sioux has seen a little better action and so have Pikes but things will be getting under way soon. Most all inland trout season will be closing Sep 30th so please make sure of what section of river you are fishing.
Hunting reports have been mixed so far bear hunter have had a pretty good season over all with a few bigger than average bears taken so far but that’s normal for the area. Duck season opened Saturday good local duck reports. River Jump shooters and pond jumpers had a pretty good opener for ducks with a lot of woodies and teal making up the bulk of bag. Grouse hunters have been hearing a lot of birds getting up but with foliage so heavy yet it will be a few weeks before the hunting will pick up but hunter are still bringing home a few birds. Deer hunters are seeing some better bucks with the cooling temps the last few days. Some decent bucks have been taken in the last week.
