Well it’s mid winter up here in the North Country and fish are starting to get into their mid winter pattern’s. The bay itself has a good ice cover from the head of the bay north to long island. North of Long Island and the south channel up to Vantassells’ and Bayfield area the ice sheet is new; so beware of this before heading into this area. North of Bayfield up to Basswood and Madeline the ice is avg. 6 to 10 inches. North of Basswood to Hermit the sheet is new with ice 3 to 4 inches. I will be in this area today so I will know more about this area tomorrow. The fishing reports have been a bit mixed; this past week the fish are here one day, gone the next. The lighthouse area in the bay has been putting out a mixed bag smelt and perch have been the most consistent with a few Browns and Pike coming to the ice as well. A few Splake and Walleye mixed in too. The 1st & 2nd Landing are seeing some Perch action but it is hit and miss for taking a meal home. The Trout and Salmon bite has been good to great depending on the day. River mouths and Houghton Pointe have been landing some nice fish around the shallow water along the islands. Lake Trout fishing is just getting underway, we are just waiting for ice in the right areas. We might be able to get to Hermit Island this weekend; we are keeping our fingers crossed. White Fish are hitting most days in the deeper water of the bay to the South Channel also around Red Cliff area over to Basswood. We will post again later in the week if conditions change. In the meantime, stop on in at River Rock for the latest fishing report, for some new trout fishing gear and don’t forget about the smoked fish and sandwiches from Good Thyme Bistro. ( A great treat on the ice!)
