The spring season has come to the northland early this year. With very warm temps for this time of year. The smelt run was better than it has been in the past few years to the surprise of many. They ran for about a week this year so all and all a good run. For fishing reports it has been great fishing for near shore trolling coho have been the bulk of the catch this year with some browns and splake mixed in as well.
From the south shore up by Port Wing all the way down into the bay the fishing has been good to great depending on the day. The bay its self is starting to show some life again as well. The post spawn walleye bite is starting to pick up a bit but fishing will get better over the next week or two .The hot pond is seeing a little more action this week with some nice walleye being caught no big numbers but a few fish are being caught. The smallmouth have started to head up in to the shallows and are staging. They are not spawning yet but it will be earlier than most years. The water temps are in the low to mid 50s around the sand cut and Brush Pointe areas.
The pike bite is also getting under way from the head of the bay to the east around the sand cut area. Shallow water is the key this time of year for pike 2ft to 8ft. Casting with spoons and stick baits to soaking smelt have all been catching pike.
Lake trout fishing is all so starting to pick up for shallow water trolling long island up into the islands cover water to find them and look for warm water pockets to find the best action.
For the inland report the steelhead season started off with low clear water and slowed things down a bit. Some nice river browns have also come to the net this spring so a nice change up when working the steelhead. The pan fish are still holding in the deeper waters near to their spawning areas. Folks are all ready getting fired up for the 2010 fishing opener it should be a great one this year with the ice coming off most inland lakes very early this year.
