Well the 2010 opener has come and gone. The high winds we had kept a lot of folks from heading to their favorite lakes Wfor the opener. Saturday started with 20 to 30 mile an hour winds with gusts up to 35 so the conditions were not the best for the opening day. The fishing was a bit hit and miss depending who you talked to. Some did well and some not so good. The pike were hitting well for most anglers fishing the weed beds live and dead bait worked best then casting second. Walleye fisherman had to fight high winds to stay on the walleye but fish were caught most were caught along the first brakes and rocky pointes. Jig and minnows worked the best but some fish were caught casting crankbaits and trolling live bait. The bass were also hitting for anglers willing to fight the high winds plastics and crankbaits were the key worked slowly along weed beds and shallow bays. Panfish were also on the bite crappie and bluegill were the main target for the pan fisherman. Small minnows, worms and waxies were the best. The inland trout opener was a bit slow for a lot of folks most caught fish but anglers were hopeing for a bit better action. Crawlers and worm seemed to catch the most fish but fish were also caught on spinners and small crank baits. The bay has been so rough for the past week most folks have not been going out. The catch and release season is now open on chequamegon bay for the huge smallmouth that bay is so well known for. Most fish are holding in 4 to 8ft of water just waiting for warming water temps to begin their spawn . The walleye bite has a week or two before it gets into full swing here on the bay as well again need the water to warm up some. The trout and salmon have been the main bite most of the spring.
