Rain and wind has been the word for the first part of this month’s winds and rain have been hampering the bite and lake conditions. First we will start with the bay…. the smallmouth have for the most part moved off shore. Some bass are still holding over in the shallows in spawning areas but most have started to head for summer grounds. Try working the south end of the Ashland breakwall and the rock pile deeper breaks are also a good place to start scattered weed pockets along the breaks are good places as well. Work areas fast and move on to find active fish run and gun is your best bet until you find the active fish then fineness for the moody fish. Walleye have been a little hit and miss but fish can be had there are walleye scattered all over the bay you just need to cover water and find active fish. Harness and stick bait are the norm for baits try from 6ft to 8th in the dawn and dusk hours and deeper during the midday or sunny days. Pike have been hitting for guy’s chasing them. A lot of smaller fish around this year, but some 40 inch plus have been boated lately. Work the weed beds and old dock areas with spoons and deep crank baits. Lake trout and salmon have been coming to the boats the flats have been producing fish as well as in the islands 80 to 150 feet have been best but some shallow water has been putting out fish as well. Down riggers and dipsie’s are the norm, however, some fish are also coming in on flat lines running stick baits. River and stream fishing is also picking up with the current rain falls we have been having most rivers are running high and dirty but fish can be had. When the flows start to come down the fishing will be hot until it gets low and clear again. Some hatches are starting to come off as well it just depends what stream you are on. Hex hatches are starting on some of the local streams which should bring some real trophies to the net over the next week or two. Browns and brook trout the main bite right now streamer rainbows can be had on some of the local streams as well but for the most part it is a brown and brook trout game right now.
